History of the Nature Center

The Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center was created as the result of a land acquisition in 2005 with the goal of protecting a diversity of habitats including riparian coastal flatwoods and estuarine wetland habitats adjacent to Clear Creek. Funding for the project was provided through grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Additional funding was provided by the City of League City, Galveston County, and the Galveston Bay Estuary Program.

Current Nature Center Amenities

The 148-acre park—located on the south shore of Clear Creek at 1220 North Egret Bay Boulevard—provides a home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and is an excellent habitat for migratory birds. The park currently includes a 1.3-mile concrete birding and multipurpose observation trail, bird blinds, restrooms, picnic tables, pavilion, parking lot, Monarch waystation and pollinator garden.

Who are Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney

Fay and Ned Dudney moved to League City in 1954, where they planted roots and raised three children. Ned worked as a family practitioner in the community for 50 years and was deeply committed to civic engagement, serving on the first City Council. He was also passionate about the economic development of the region and served on the board of many organizations, including the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership.

Ned’s wife Fay was a lifetime gardener and community activist, serving on the League City Garden Club, the League City Historical Society, and the Board of the Hellen Hall Library. Many people attribute her with saving the live oaks along Main Street near League Park.

In 2009, the Clear Creek Nature Center was named after the couple and their legacy of service to the League City community. During the dedication ceremony, Fay remarked: “I want people to be educated about preserving our environment…we need to keep some trees and green grass along with a sense of community.”

Nature Center Management Plan

In 2016, the League City Parks Department—in collaboration with an advisory group comprised of federal and state government natural resource experts, local conservation groups, various recreation groups, and interested private citizens—created a Management Plan for the Nature Center. The goal of the plan was to outline long term resource management, maintenance, and public access activities at the center, as well as serve as the basis for future consultation with stakeholders and project partners to evaluate the success of completed projects and plan future improvements.
