What is the purpose of the Economic Development Strategic Plan?

League City is annually ranked both in Texas and nationally as one of the most desirable communities in which to live and raise a family. To keep League City as an attractive, highly desirable community, the Economic Development Department needs to regularly update its Strategic Plan.

Over the next 5 months this process will include conducting focus groups and listening to residents, creating strategic directives and initiatives which will provide direction to City staff, so we spend our time and your tax dollars to improve your quality of life and make League City the community that you want it to be!

Why is Quality Economic Development Important?

League City’s Economic Development Department works to elevate and sustain League City’s superior quality of life by serving as the public advocate in the City of League City for prospective businesses, existing businesses, and commercial development and residential development.

While we work to attract desirable places for our citizens to live, work, eat, shop, and play, we also work to support, retain, and grow our existing businesses and housing that form the heartbeat of our local economy.

Economic Development is essential to grow and diversify the community’s economy to pay for the services and amenities, including but not limited to, parks, trails, streets, drainage, lights, public safety, healthcare, education, library, and convenient commercial places to shop, eat, and play, that our citizens enjoy.

The Economic Development Department creates value in a community by requiring quality construction, attracting high quality, local jobs as well as high quality, commercial investment and development, increasing the number of daytime employees, shoppers, and tourists, investing in infrastructure, entrepreneurial and small business growth, a pro-growth, business ecosystem, as well as “placemaking”, and expanding opportunities for workforce development, education, and job training.

Economic development retains value in a community by stopping retail leakage (i.e. when citizens spend their money outside League City), assisting retail and/or service employees grow into higher paying professional jobs, finding innovative ways to affordably repair and replace aging infrastructure as well as provide city services, eliminating threats of future, financial liability, promoting and implementing community-based strategic planning, and capitalizing upon strategic opportunities, particularly as it pertains to development.

The Economic Development Department generates leads for prospective employers with high quality, high-paying jobs through professional networking, prospecting (i.e. direct company contacts), and working with site location consultants, service providers, investors, brokers, and economic development partners – Galveston County, the Bay Area of Houston Economic Partnership, the Houston Regional Economic Development Alliance, Texas Governor’s Office of Economic Development & Tourism, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
